Research Ethics BC was formerly known as the BC Ethics Harmonization Initiative (BCEHI) until early-2018. BCEHI spearheaded development and implementation of harmonized models to make the ethics review process more timely and effective, allowing researchers to submit a single ethics application regardless of the number of BC jurisdictions involved in a project. Research Ethics BC continues the work done by BCEHI.
In 2018, BCEHI became a part of the British Columbia Academic Health Science Network (BC AHSN) and changed its name to Research Ethics BC (REBC).
Initially, BCEHI was supported collectively by the partner institutions, with core funding from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). In 2016, MSFHR provided additional funding to support ongoing management/sustainability and development of a shared online platform. REBC’s work continues to accelerate the ethics process for health researchers through reciprocity agreements between the partners.
